Each house must participate in a strict code of ethics outlined by MASH. In addition, each MASH member home has been thoroughly inspected to ensure the standard of living goes far beyond the local requirements. This legislation limits state agencies and their vendors to referring to certified ADF housing. DPH awarded a contract to the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing (MASH) to be the certifying body, and the training and technical assistance vendor. Recovery residences — formerly known as halfway houses — are licensed residential treatment programs, while Massachusetts sober homes are peer-led and do not provide treatment. The process involves a thorough review of policies, procedures, and the living environment. Operators must demonstrate they provide a substance-free setting with regular drug testing, peer support meetings, and access to recovery resources. Certified homes must maintain proper documentation, ensuring transparency. This certification enhances credibility and provides residents with a safe, supportive environment.

Mission Association for Seniors Housing (M.A.S.H.) and its partners offer a variety of housing and care settings to meet your individual needs. These offerings begin with Independent Living for low to moderate income seniors, both private and subsidized  Supportive/Assisted Living and purchased Life Lease apartments. Each housing amphetamine addiction treatment community provides access to services such as Social Activity Programs, Community Busy Bus, and other supports. With homeless shelters reporting significant overcrowding and tent encampments on the rise across Massachusetts, the Commonwealth needs innovative and streamlined options to create housing that offers supportive services. In 2021, the MASH Grant Funds were allocated by the Massachusetts State Legislature as part of a $150 million reserve to support the production of permanent supportive housing (PSH). PSH is an evidence-based approach that combines permanent housing with wraparound services for people with complex, disabling medical conditions who have experienced homelessness.

Public hearings and meetings provide platforms for dialogue, balancing the needs of residents and the broader community. Ohio Recovery Housing, a NARR affiliate, has created a document which outlines the process for supporting a resident who becomes ill and starts to show symptoms of possible COVID-19. Sober homes applying for annual recertification must remit payment of certification fees during the recertification process and prior to scheduling the home inspection. Evidence that mechanisms exist for residents to inform and help guide operations and advocate for community-building.

In Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing (MASH) is the designated affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR), which sets national standards for recovery residences. As of 2023, MASH oversees over 180 certified sober homes in the state, providing essential oversight and support to ensure these homes meet rigorous safety and ethical standards MASH – Standards. Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing (MASH) serves as the primary agency for accountability of all certified homes in Massachusetts.
